Los Roques

An archipelago of gorgeous, white sand islands, Los Roques is primarily inhabited by Venezuelans and Italians. Only one island, Gran Roque, accomodates visitors year round. Today we went scuba diving on the south side of the islands in Gran Talud de Sur and then hiked to the tallest peak among the islands to visit il faro (the lighthouse).

We're staying at Posada Gremary, a delightful place with a handful of rooms. Breakfast and dinner are included, and they agreed to pack us lunches in a cooler for the dive boat. They love the challenge of cooking for “vegetarians,” but are greatful that we eat fish and cheese.

We dove twice today along a coral reef. We saw several spotted eels, many edible fish. and scores of tropical Caribbean fish. Tomorrow we'll dive on the northeast islands and spend our safety stop in Francisqui. These islands were originallly named by Nordic travelers (Francis Cay prounounced “Fransiski”) and then renamed by Spanish according to the phonetic translation, and finally renamed by Venezuelans to be more consistent with their conventions.
